Nancy Kerrigan's brother Mark kerrigan charged with manslaughter

The brother of figure skater Nancy Kerrigan( won the bronze medal at the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, France, and the silver at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. She won a gold medal at the 1993 U.S. Championships) was charged with manslaughter in the death of their 70-year-old father in what prosecutors called a drunken rage during a trivial argument over use of the family telephone, the Middlesex district attorney's office said Thursday.

Mark Kerrigan, 45, was indicted by a Middlesex Superior Court grand jury in the Jan. 24 death of Daniel Kerrigan.

He had already been charged with assault and battery on an elderly person resulting in serious bodily injury. Since being released on bail after a psychiatric evaluation, he has been living with his mother in the family's Stoneham home, where the alleged assault took place.

Mark Kerrigan's "reckless actions and complete disregard for his father's safety and well-being" led to his death, District Attorney Gerry Leone said in announcing the indictment.

"This defendant should have known that the cruel acts that he committed against his elderly father, including grabbing him by the neck with enough force to cause a fracture, were highly likely to result in substantial harm and endanger his father's life," Leone said.

Members of the close-knit Kerrigan family have insisted they do not blame Mark Kerrigan for the death of his father, who had a pre-existing heart condition. They said in a statement Thursday that they were "deeply disappointed" in the decision to pursue a manslaughter charge.
They said they look forward "to the facts being considered by an impartial jury."
A state medical examiner said the cause of death was "cardiac dysrhythmia" — a loss or interruption of a normal heartbeat that can lead to cardiac arrest — after an altercation with neck compression that damaged his windpipe. The findings also noted that the elder Kerrigan had high blood pressure and clogged arteries.
Kerrigan is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn. The maximum sentence for manslaughter in Massachusetts is 20 years in prison.

Leone described a chaotic scene that unfolded over hours and climaxed with the violent clash between Daniel Kerrigan and a drunken Mark Kerrigan claiming his father was "faking it."

Police received a 911 call around 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 23 on reports of an altercation between Mark Kerrigan and a female acquaintance, Leone said. The woman said Kerrigan wouldn't let her leave the house.

Daniel Kerrigan returned home to try to calm his son. Over the next six hours, Mark Kerrigan became drunk and repeatedly argued with his parents, trying to use the phone to contact the woman. He had already left more than a dozen messages on her cell phone, prosecutors said.

After midnight, Mark Kerrigan went into his parents' bedroom, screaming obscenities and yelling about the telephone not working, authorities said. They went to talk to their son downstairs, where the argument escalated into violence, with their son pushing, grabbing and shoving his father, with several pictures knocked off a wall, prosecutors said.

Mark Kerrigan grabbed his father around the neck, fracturing his larynx and causing him to fall to the floor on his back, unconscious, Leone said. Kerrigan's mother, Brenda, called 911; Mark Kerrigan is heard screaming obscenities at his father.

When police approached Mark Kerrigan, he swore at them as they attempted to subdue him. Once handcuffed, Kerrigan acknowledged the fight but told police his father was "faking it," Leone said.

Mark Kerrigan has a long criminal record, with convictions dating to 1991, including drunken driving, assault and battery, domestic assaults, resisting arrest and violation of a restraining order. His former lawyer said Kerrigan, an unemployed plumber, was on medication for post-traumatic stress syndrome and was seeing a psychiatrist.

Kerrigan's family has challenged the medical examiner's findings.

In a letter released in February, Nancy Kerrigan, a two-time Olympic medal winner, called the homicide ruling "unjustified" and said she and her family plan to "help my brother fight"

She was at the center of a saga at the U.S. Championships before the 1994 Games, when an assailant clubbed her right knee during practice and an investigation revealed rival Tonya Harding had knowledge of the planning of the attack.

Antimatter:new world

In particle physics, antimatter is the extension of the concept of the antiparticle to matter, where antimatter is composed of antiparticles in the same way that normal matter is composed of particles. For example, an antielectron (a positron, an electron with a positive charge) and an antiproton (a proton with a negative charge) could form an antihydrogen atom in the same way that an electron and a proton form a normal matter hydrogen atom. Furthermore, mixing matter and antimatter would lead to the annihilation of both in the same way that mixing antiparticles and particles does, thus giving rise to high-energy photons (gamma rays) or other particle–antiparticle pairs.

There is considerable speculation as to why the observable universe is apparently almost entirely matter, whether there exist other places that are almost entirely antimatter instead, and what might be possible if antimatter could be harnessed, but at this time the apparent asymmetry of matter and antimatter in the visible universe is one of the greatest unsolved problems in physics. The process by which this asymmetry between particles and antiparticles developed is called baryogenesis.

Space Junk : Removed in london

UK researchers have developed a device to clear dangerous space garbage from lower earth orbit.

After 50 years of space travel, more than 5,500 tonnes of junk is believed to be cluttering space around the planet. There's a risk of collision with spacecraft or of large items crashing back to earth; the debris is also believed to obstruct satellite television and other communications signals.

The University of Surrey scientists have devised a 3kg miniature satellite - or 'nanosatellite' - fitted with a solar sail which could trawl around in lower earth orbit to trap debris and bring it down safely.

They say the CubeSail could be fitted to satellites or launch vehicles and used to trap equipment that has reached the end of its mission. A prototype will be launched late next year.

"Protecting our planet and environment is key for sustainable growth. CubeSail is a novel, low cost space mission which will demonstrate for the first time space debris/satellite deorbiting using an ultra light 5 x 5m sail stowed and supported on a 3kg nanosatellite," said
Dr Vaios Lappas, lead researcher on the project.

"Following successful in orbit demonstration, the proposed deorbit system will be offered as a standard deorbit system for low earth orbit missions for satellites with a mass of less than 500kg at a very low cost."

CubeSail is due to be ready for launch on new satellites next year, and is expected to be available for shifting existing debris from 2013.

London, March 30 : A tiny three-kg satellite or "nanosatellite" will rid the space of dangerous clouds of junk hurtling around in the earth's lower orbit.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin Said:No more delays on nuclear plant in Iran

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has announced on the day of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's arrival that a Russian-built nuclear plant in Iran will be started up despite a request from the United States for a delay.

Bill Clinton did not criticize the long-delayed project directly but said the Obama administration opposes the timing of the nuclear plant's startup. Clinton sees Putin today.

The United States and European Union countries suspect Iran is using a civilian nuclear program to make an atomic bomb.

They question the need for nuclear power given that Iran has the world's fourth-largest oil reserves and has no industrial need for additional power from nuclear plants.

At a news conference with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Clinton said that although Iran is entitled to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, it must reassure the world it is not trying to build a nuclear weapon.

"In the absence of those reassurances, we think it would be premature to go forward with any project at this time, because we want to send an unequivocal message to the Iranians," she said.

Lavrov asserted that, whatever the U.S. concerns, his country will finish its work on the Bushehr nuclear power plant shortly.

"The project will be completed," Lavrov said. "We are now in the final stage, and this nuclear power plant will be launched."

Lavrov said U.S.-Russian negotiations on a treaty to reduce long-range nuclear weapons are close to completion.

The accord would replace the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, or START, which expired in December.

Lavrov said the two countries are discussing the time and place for President Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to sign the deal, which must be ratified by each country's legislature.

"We are now at the finish line," Lavrov said.

Clinton was a bit more circumspect.

"We have a saying in the United States: Don't count your chickens before they hatch," she said. "And that means that we are beginning our discussions."

Daylight Saving Time: Coming to A Clock near You

This weekend is the annual rite of spring -- springing forward and advancing the clock one hour.

For some, daylight saving time cheats them out of an hour of sleep. For others, daylight saving time means more time in the afternoon to savor the sunshine.
Doctors agree that it does take time for the human body to adjust to the change.

"It turns out that it takes up 2-3 days sometimes even longer to make up and adjust to that extra hour loss," said Dr. Sonia Ancoli-Israel of the University of California San-Diego School of Medicine.
"I go out on Friday night so I don't lose the hour," she said. "Actually, I really like it because especially this time of year with the weather and getting the extra hour of daylight."

Lora Tjomstol knows all about daylight saving time. Her birthday is March 12, and it forces her to navigate weekend plans around the time change.

According to CBS News, there are other impacts. The number of serious heart attacks increases 6 to 10 percent on the first three workdays after the change.

Also, Wall Street economists say sleep deprived traders often produce large negative returns on that Monday.

The Florida Highway Patrol is also warning drivers and pedestrians to be especially careful on the Monday morning commute to work or school. It will likely be dark and everyone needs to pay close attention to the roads.

The Broward Sheriff's Office also reminds everyone that an annual date like daylight saving time is the perfect opportunity to ensure smoke alarms are in good working condition.
